Pavement Protectors is an app that helps improves both self-driving cars and the roads in specific cities where these cars are present. The app is a Citizen Science Project meaning that the user is helping in the scientific process by viewing photos and helping scientists get through the data are a much faster rate. The app has users identify whether there is a pothole present or not. If so, the user draws a square around the pothole and continues on to the next image. The idea behind the app is that these results will be sent to both the developers of self-driving cars, aiding them in being able to program them to react and respond to potholes more effectively while also sending the information to companies that work with the government to fix potholes. The results would put an exact location on the pothole and help them fix the biggest, or most important, potholes first. Users would gain points by going through photos and be able to earn badges, climb levels, and work up to prizes like a free car wash or soda from a gas station.
